University of Hartford Performing Arts Center, Hartford, CT
Partners:
Federal, State, and City Government; individual donors; corporations; and foundations. A $4 million grant was awarded through the Department of Economic and Community Development's Urban Action Program.
Project:
Approximately 7.2 acres located at the intersection of Albany Avenue (Route 44) and Westbourne Parkway, Hartford. Previously, the site housed 74,000 square feet of automobile dealership and service repair shop buildings formerly know as Thomas Cadillac.
The site required remediation of soil and ground water contamination (including excavation and off-site disposal of contaminated soil). Contaminants included volatile organic and petroleum-based products.
The University purchased the property in 2002. Environmental testing and remediation of the site was completed by 2006. Renovation and construction began in the summer of 2007 and was completed on time and under budget a year later.
The $22 million construction project transformed a vacant "brownfield" automobile distributorship site into the University's new teaching and performance facility. The facility also houses University offices, a bank, a community room, and a cafe.
